A Book I Wasn't Expecting to Find
I came across Picketing the President by Mary Nolan Brown quite unexpectedly while visiting the 2026 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC. There were so many books, authors, publishers, and displays everywhere that it was easy to get distracted and move from one booth to another. But this particular book caught my attention in a way I didn't expect.
I saw the cover and title displayed on a digital screen at one of the exhibitors, although I honestly can't remember the name of the company now. What really made me stop was the short mini-trailer they played for the book. I wasn't even planning to buy another book that day, but the trailer made me curious about the story and the history behind it.
When I got home, I searched for the book because I wanted to know more about it. I ended up ordering a copy, and about three weeks later, it arrived.
I have to admit, I didn't expect to become so absorbed in it. I started reading it thinking I would just read a few chapters, but I kept wanting to know what would happen next. Before I knew it, I was completely caught up in the story and the world Mary Nolan Brown created.
What I especially enjoyed was the way the book brings the women’s suffrage movement and the people involved in it to life. It is one thing to read about historical events in a textbook, but it is something entirely different to experience them through a story and the people who lived through them. I'm actually glad I happened to see that digital display at the book fair. If I had simply walked past it, I might never have discovered this book. Sometimes the best books are the ones you weren't even looking for.

The Newsletter I Almost Ignored
I have to admit, I almost never read the newsletters I receive after signing up at book events. I think I originally signed up with a company while attending a book event, and they kept sending me emails featuring different books, including Picketing the President. At first, I was honestly a little annoyed because my inbox was filling up. 😂
Then one day, I finally opened one of their newsletters about this book—and I'm so glad I did.
Something about the description immediately caught my attention. I looked up Picketing the President and decided to give it a chance. Once I started reading, I understood why they kept featuring it. The story drew me in, and I became especially interested in Delia, Captain Manning, and Grandmother Nolan.
I really enjoyed the historical setting and the way the characters made the story feel personal rather than simply like a history lesson. And now I'm hoping there is more to their story. I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye when I reached the end! I would definitely read more about Delia, Captain Manning, and Grandmother Nolan if Mary Nolan Brown decides to continue their story.
