LET’S SAVE THE WORLD
The first thing we need to do is see ourselves as one. No “us” and “them”. Take a close look at them and decide what you can agree on. Be pleasant – don’t call each other names. (Does it sound as though I’m talking to the children?) Our very existence depends on our working together. At this point, I’m thinking of the citizens of the United States of America. We should lead by example.
The Middle East has been in turmoil for thousands of years. Looking at the history can be discouraging. It will take intelligent, brave people on all sides to lead and inspire others to leave their hate behind and cooperate for a better life for all.
We face the prospect of a protracted war in Europe if the Ukrainian and Russian conflict is not settled soon. With nuclear arms and other weapons, such a conflict would be devastating for all of us.
And then there are the threats from nature.
There is an asteroid hurtling toward earth. It should be here in three or four years. If it hits us, it won’t destroy the earth, but it will leave a very large hole.
There is a volcano that it threatening to erupt.
It is rumored China can destroy our power grid. That means not only no lights, but everything that depends on electricity: the gas pump, the electric car, the computer, no refrigeration, or TV. How do we communicate? Signal fires? Runners carrying messages? Drums? Pony express?
Ah, if it isn’t one problem, it’s another. As Miss Scarlet would say, “It is rather vexing.”
I know you and I can’t solve the world’s problems, but, as the old spiritual says, “brighten the corner where you are.”
Until next time (when I promise to have a lighter subject).
